12am thoughts: The 7pm HRRR/NAM3k both agree that we could see dews as high as 65 in the afternoon hours in Kansas. Both the NAM3k/HRRR have instability values reaching into the high 3,000 J kg. This will be enough instability and moisture to support severe weather tomorrow. When we take a look at the Bulk shear Severe Weather product, the NAM 3km believes that some storms could have winds 18k above the earths surface at around 73 knots. This would be exceptionally good for tornadoes, however, the HRRR brings those winds down to 45 knots, maxing out at around 56 knots in some places. Storms still look to be discreet in the afternoon hours. But around 00z storms look to merge with each other and become more of a wind threat into the night hours. Cloud coverage shouldn't be an issue, so the atmosphere should heat up pretty quickly.
Regardless, I will be chasing, because it's Sunday and I love weather.
Avatar
Cameron (Fortson, GA) 21-Jun-20 01:55 AM
Thinking some initial supercells, looking at some solutions with a more semi-discrete southern end storm mode initially in OK panhandle (at least off 0Z HRRR)
Avatar
Cameron (Fortson, GA) 21-Jun-20 02:03 AM
A RELATIVELY BRIEF WINDOW FOR A COUPLE TORNADOES ALSO APPEARS POSSIBLE EARLY THIS EVENING ACROSS PARTS OF SOUTH-CENTRAL KS INTO NORTHWESTERN OK AS LOW-LEVEL SHEAR INCREASES AND STORM MODE PROBABLY REMAINS SEMI-DISCRETE.

8am thoughts; Good morning folks. As expected we already have 3000 CAPE in the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle and Western Kansas. Along with this high instability, in Western Kansas the effective shear is currently around 30 knots. We should see this rise later in the day around the afternoon hours. Looking at the Spearville, KS Mesonet we already have 67°F dewpoints. This is very good. Storms should form around 2pm/3pm. (edited)

Payton (Lawrence, KS) 21-Jun-20 10:41 AM
HOWEVER, GUIDANCE HAS BEEN UNDERDONE WITH THE MCS ACROSS THE RED RIVER VALLEY THIS MORNING, AND THIS RENDERS UNCERTAINTY TO HOW PERVASIVE HIGH-QUALITY BOUNDARY-LAYER MOISTURE AND RESULTANT EXTREME INSTABILITY MAY ACTUALLY BE LATER TODAY. THUS WILL DEFER TO LATER OUTLOOKS REGARDING A POTENTIAL UPGRADE TO CATEGORY 4/MODERATE RISK.

2017 similar setup that ended up a moderate produced tors here in Nebraska for about 7 hours with gorilla hail and 135mph straight lines
The front is almost stationary so it will take hours for a cold pool to kill the 5000+ cape

I am thinking drive to sioux city and evluate from there. NAM wants it just west of there, but RAP wants it an hour fartehr south west of there. Work tomorrow means I need to be at least somewhat considerate of the drive back time.
Is there anyone who is chasing the NE/IA setup who I could caravan with? I don't have data and if I am unable to find a chase partner at the last minute I will be up a creek and unable to chase that far solo (edited)

On to other news, @Payton (Lawrence, KS) yes Norfolk or Columbus is my bet
Could start even further north new Plainview
There is another zone down by Smith center KS that should maximum a little later near 6-7pm
When u got a setup like today, we could see a very large zone with different time setups
Avatar
Mike Thornton (Norman, OK) 21-Jun-20 12:04 PM
11am thoughts; as I mentioned last night, the instability woll continue to rise as the day progress is due to the lack of cloud coverage in southwestern Kansas. In fact, southwestern Kansas currently has 4,000 J kg. That is 1,000 more camp than we had at 8 am. sure is still around 30 knots 18,000 feet into the atmosphere, which is pretty good. In spearville, Kansas the dew points are now 69 degrees. That is a 2 degree increase since 8 am. I am really enjoying the atmosphere setup for today.

I'm with Mike Thornton and agree that, on the whole, the best tornado threat is going to be in SW KS. But, the stuff in NC KS is a little concerning to me, in that it could kick out a boundary and be the ignition for new development later this afternoon.
The stuff in NC KS is rooted on the 850mb warm front...and none of that was modeled this morning.

@Adam Reagan (Norman, OK) well that sucks 😂 I'm on us 410 I drop South towards mineola try say out in front of it and capture the Squall line that is trying to take me over. I recorded 29 mile per hour winds. So it's pretty Gusty towards the edge of the storm. Not severe though
Looks like a huge semi jackknifed towards my road that was going to take me towards mineola. Stuck on us 400.
